Here Comes The Sun

For much of my life, I have woken at 2.30 am. This doesn’t mean I am an early riser. I am ever hoping to sleep through to 7am like the next man.

But there is an unwelcome internal alarm clock that goes off in my head, just about every morning. And as lie awake, for an hour or so, I often write lyrics. Just in my head. If they are any good, they will stay with me and later that day perhaps, I will shape a song or two out of them.

During one sleepless session some years ago, I wrote a poem about being awake while the rest of the world was asleep. I actually got out of bed that morning, made a cup of tea and sat on the balcony. I could hear the insects and the wind in the trees. Light began to change ever so slowly and I could sense this imagery… of sunlight working its way through darkness towards me, as a kind of spiritual awakening.

The poem sat idle for many years. One day, with nothing better to do I found a tune and a few favored chords and lo and behold, just like the imagery in the words, a song was born.

Boy I had some fun recording it. It began with a simple vocal and acoustic guitar track. Then I started to imagine the sound of that morning and, using my sound designer and composer skills I started to shape some kind of underscore, of the insects and bugs, the wind in the trees and the gradual rising of the sun.

The process of titling the song was also fun, to me at least.

Did you know that you can’t copyright a song title?

The answer is of course… no you cannot!

Apologies to any die hard Beatle fans out there. But this poem was about my own ‘Here Comes The Sun experience. And thus I am staking my own claim on, until someone else writes a song about it.

The curious child that I am I also tried to paint what I could hear that morning and that can be witnessed in the cover art.

It’s fun making stuff up, isn’t it?

Cheers,

Chris
